There’s nothing to do but get certified when you are old enough. It never hurts to have as much experience as you can about your area of study.

You can subscribe to Sport Diver, the official magazine of the PADI Diving Society, and get more familiar with equipment and marine species. You can learn as much as possible about safety from http://www.diversalertnetwork.org. You can volunteer for the Surfrider Foundation or Oceana and do some beach clean up. In a few years you can become a certified lifeguard through the American Red Cross.

What could I do to work towards being a scuba diving instrustor?

I might do a scuba diving course in the summer, but im not sure if its pointless and im just waisting my money. What does it benefit?
